Opt-Out

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver.

All new students to Davidson should receive a waiver system activation email. This activation is required before a waiver can be submitted. If you did not receive this email, please submit a support request by clicking here

You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Annual - 06/01/2025 - 07/25/2025

Spring/Summer Semester: 11/01/2025 - 12/01/2025

Davidson College Waiver Criteria

Welcome to the Davidson College Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). Davidson College requires that all students maintain student health insurance coverage as a condition of enrollment. You may apply for a waiver if you already have coverage under an alternate health insurance plan that meets certain minimum requirements.

To qualify for a waiver, your health insurance plan must meet the requirements as listed below:

  1. Medical coverage must be currently active
  2. Insurance plan must be accepted by off-campus medical facilities and providers within a 50 mile radius of campus.
  3. Approved Types of Coverage:
    • Employer Plans
    • Private plans 
    • Medicare 
    • Medicaid (NC only and primary care provider must be within 50 miles of Davidson, NC) 
    • Short-Term Limited Duration plans (must cover the same coverage dates as SHIP)
    • Ministry Cost Sharing plans 
  4. Following types of plans will not be accepted:
    • Financial Assistance plans and travel plans or plans that require you to pay for treatment yourself and then apply for reimbursement.
    • HMO plans that are not accepted by off-campus medical facilities and providers within 50 miles of campus (e.g., Kaiser).
    • Medicaid plans that do not have medical facility/provider coverage within 50 miles of campus.

Please note: All students are eligible to be seen at the Center for Student Health and Wellbeing regardless of the insurance they have. 

Waiver requests MUST be submitted no later than July 25, 2025 to be considered.
